Observations of electrons of energy greater than 30 keV made by the ESRO IA satellite during a series of isolated substorms are described. Near the midnight meridian, increases in the electron counts occur which reach a maximum at the same time as the maximum in the auroral electrojet (AE) magnetic index. Near the noon meridian, however, the maximum in the electron counts occurs some 1-2 hr after the maximum in AE. The night-side and day-side observations are shown to be consistent with a longitudinal electron drift in the geomagnetic field, and they provide evidence that at least some of the electrons are accelerated during their drift motion.
