Results are presented for temperature measurements made in the mesosphere with inflatable spheres, acoustic grenades, pitot probes, thermistors, and rigid instrumented spheres, which confirm the existence of a temperature inversion near a height of 75 km. It is noted that the inversion was observed in about 30% of the measurements surveyed, indicating that a systematic error did not exist in the measurement techniques. The measurements show that: (1) the base of the inversion varies from a maximum of 80 km to a minimum of 65 km, (2) the magnitude of the inversion is generally greater during the winter than during summer, (3) the inversion is observed during both night and day at a number of geographic locations.
