Experimental and theoretical cosmochemical data are reviewed which shed light on the conditions and processes in the solar nebula (the protoplanetary disk) during the early evolutionary stages of protoplanetary matter. This information must be included in models of the formation and early evolution of the solar system. The meteorite data are discussed, and conclusions are drawn from them concerning the conditions and processes in the inner region of the solar nebula - the region where formation of the Earth, the planets, and the asteroids took place. The thermochemical processes in the outer solar nebula are also discussed. These are processes beyond the water ice condensation front, including deuterium exchange and carbon/nitrogen chemistry. The authors also consider the conditions for preservation of presolar interstellar particles in the solar nebula.
