Observations of the solar Lyman alpha flux obtained by the University of Paris experiment on board the reactivated OSO-5 spacecraft during solar minimum are presented. Measurements of total Lyman alpha flux and the flux at line center were obtained from August 1974 to August 1975, and were calibrated assuming instrument aging was due to solar illumination. In contrast to the relation observed earlier for periods of high solar activity, under low solar activity conditions the central Lyman alpha flux varies independently of the total flux. Empirical relations are derived for the variations of total Lyman alpha flux and central Lyman alpha flux with solar activity as measured by the 10.7 cm solar flux which are also found to differ from those obtained for periods of high solar activity. The observations confirm the factor of two variability of Lyman alpha emission between solar maximum and minimum and the existence of an early minimum in EUV lines, and reveal strong perturbations of the lower boundary of the transition region, possibly related to the large-scale evolution of coronal holes.
