Approximate equations describing the evolution of the translational-rotational motion of a viscoelastic sphere in a central Newtonian force field are derived. The steady-state motions of the sphere are identified, and their stability is analyzed. The motion described may serve as a model for tide phenomena associated with the motion of the planets of the solar system.
