In the present paper, Il'in and Osipov's (1980) plasma-sheet electron distribution in the equatorial plane is used to study the energetics and morphology of plasma-sheet electron precipitation regions as a function of the conditions in the magnetosphere, such as the electric field potential across the tail, and the conditions of electric field shielding in the plasmapause. It is seen that the obtained energetic and morphology characteristics of plasma-sheet electron precipitation regions may provide information on the influence of electric field variations in the tail and of changes in plasmapause conditions on the polar ionosphere.
