Significant quasi two day oscillations in the wind at meteor heights have now been firmly established as the effects of zonally traveling planetary-scale waves. The waves are found to be traveling predominantly westward with wave number three. It is suggested that the oscillations represent an atmospheric free mode which exhibits considerable amplification after the summer solstice.
