Recently two independent research groups have presented compelling evidence for an accelerating universe from the observation of high- redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) (see Figure refhubble). These findings have such important ramifications for cosmology that every effort must be made to throughly test the calibrated standard candles on which they are based. We propose to use the KPNO 2.1-m and 4-m to spectroscopically screen 20 supernovae candidates, and study 8 which are SNe Ia in the Hubble flow. Two out of the 8 SNe Ia will be observed spectroscopically in the UV with a series of six weekly STIS/HST observations as part of GO 8611 (24 total orbits, P.I.: Nugent). In addition, we propose to use the CTIO 1.5-m and YALO telescopes to obtain photometric time series for the 8 SNe Ia in UBVRI. These observations will accomplish the following goals: (1) Calibration of the rest frame UV light curves of SNe Ia and an assessment of their potential use as distance indicators. (2) Improvement in our understanding of the physics of SNe Ia, metallicity/evolutionary effects and correlations between peak brightness and UV spectral features. (3) Calibration of the high-z SNe Ia photometry previously obtained by both HST and NOAO's WIYN and CTIO 4-m telescopes.
