The statistical properties of complete samples of radio and X-ray selected BL Lacertae objects are analyzed. In particular, the correlations between luminosities in different bands are studied for the first time in a systematic way by means of a partial correlation analysis. The same analysis is performed for a complete sample of Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxies. The results, interpreted in terms of relativistic beaming, provide independent evidence for higher values of the radio and optical Lorentz factors as compared to the X-ray one for radio selected BL Lacs. The properties of X-ray selected BL Lacs, on the other hand, strongly suggest that these objects are Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxies viewed off the radio and optical beaming axis. The distribution of extended radio emission for radio-selected BL Lacs is similar to that of Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxies. This argues against the existence of two separate low- and highredshift populations of BL Lacs, the latter being more quasar-like and, if beamed, related to Fanaroff-Riley type II radio galaxies.
