The ionospheric parameters obtained from a simulation of a time-dependent geomagnetic storm using the new NCAR coupled thermosphere-ionosphere general circulation model (Roble et al., 1988) are compared with F2-layer data obtained for the period March 19-28, 1979 from a latitudinal chain of East Asian ionosonde stations close to the -165-deg magnetic meridian and separated by about 5 deg in magnetic latitude. The results obtained for the same period and location showed that the data and the results of model calculations of the critical frequency (fo F2) agreed well for 45 deg magnetic north, but the agreement decreased equatorward. The agreement for the critical height (hm F2), however, was good through the whole region of comparison.
