The monthly medians of virtual height h'F simultaneously measured at 137 ionospheric stations worldwide are analyzed in order to examine the general morphology of the h'F of the F-layer. When a spherical coordinate system is used with the polar axis pointing toward the sun, it is found that only 15 couples of coefficients are suitable for providing a reasonably complete description of the surface, i.e., only these degrees of freedom are sufficient to provide a reliable description of 3288 interpolated experimental observations. A comparative investigation of the effectiveness of the geographic and geomagnetic reference system shows that the effects of solar and geomagnetic activity on the ionosphere seem to be comparable.
