For the purpose of their use as a diagnostic for the structure and dynamics of the solar envelope, high degree modes are pragmatically defined as coherent nonradial oscillations which are not easily observable in full disk observations of the sun. The full spectrum of p-modes extends from the radial modes, of zero l value, into the range of granular sizes where l values are typically 2000, with monotonically decreasing amplitude. The tracing within this range of sizes of some dividing line between truly globally coherent modes and only locally coherent oscillations may shed light on the relative importance of various excitation mechanisms for the p-modes presently discussed.
