Following Sikivie, various axion models are studied further in the
context of domain walls in the early universe. The possibility of small
explicit breaking of the discrete symmetry is emphasized. This
resolution of the domain-wall problem appears to be unnatural for
invisible-axion models but natural for scalarless axion models.
