A sufficiently simple method is described for the deployment of a long-tethered satellite system in elliptical orbit. A class of motions of a variable-length tether is examined. Equations are derived for describing horizontal oscillations of the probe (the tethered body) near the vertical-drift regime in the orbit plane and for oscillations in the direction of the normal to the orbit plane.
