Consideration is given to the generation of ionospheric irregularities by the saturated spectrum of parametric decay instabilities acting through purely growing instabilities. The excitation of parametric decay instabilities by O mode heater waves decaying into a saturated spectrum of Langmuir waves is reviewed, and the excitation of purely growing instabilities is analyzed in terms of a four-wave interaction whereby the Langmuir pump wave can excite two daugher Langmuir waves and the ionospheric irregularities (purely growing modes), as in the filamentation instability of Langmuir waves in a magnetized plasma. Nonoscillatory beating currents, differential ohmic heating and the nonlinear Lorentz force are considered as nonlinear effects in the formation of field-aligned irregularities. Results show that a broad spectrum of ionospheric irregularities may be produced with scale lengths from meters to hundreds of meters within seconds under optimum (quiet and spatially uniform) ionospheric conditions.
