A constructive general method is formulated for finding synchronous frames for use in the study of problems related to gravitational collapse. This method is applied to the Kerr metric in order to obtain a Novikov-type synchronous frame. The analysis is based on normal (nonrotating) and geodesic congruences. The removal of nonphysical singularities is examined in the context of three-metric and three-curvature on the spatial hypersurfaces in this frame.
