The theoretical interpretation of particle and field data from the auroral regions has proven to be a complex and rather controversial area of geophysics. Many different models and concepts have emerged in the context of particle acceleration, each emphasizing and idealizing different aspects of the complex interactions between charged particles. This article is a very brief review of representative sections of the literature and is concentrated on general physical principles. The various acceleration mechanisms are grouped into nine categories, each of which can be labelled in terms of idealized spatial and temporal properties of the electric and magnetic fields.
