Accurate orbital accelerations derived for Satellite 1958 Alpha (Explorer 1) have revealed the existence of periodic oscillations with a period of approximately 3.5 days and with amplitudes that reach and possibly exceed 40 percent. These oscillations, which should be due to a precessional motion of the angular-momentum vector of the satellite in its tumbling motion, can be detected sporadically throughout the 3 years covered by the observations.
