Speckle observations of binary stars began at the Naval Observatory in late 1990, employing a new camera largely modeled on the Georgia State device, attached to the 66-cm refractor. To date, more than 7000 measures of pairs have been obtained in the separation range of 0.3 to 3 arcsec. This report discusses the aims of the program, the accuracy obtained, various pitfalls encountered, and improvements made in both equipment and reduction methods during this time. A demonstration of some of the actual speckle observations is also presented.
