The effect of the postsunset onset of the equatorial spread F (ESF) on the changes in the latitudinal structure of the F-region electron density N at fixed altitudes in the Indian equatorial region was investigated using data on the height profiles of N obtained at Kodaikanal (dip latitude 1.5 deg N), Waltair (dip latitude 10.6 deg N), and Ahmedabad (dip latitude 18.6) during two observational campaigns (one covering the period between 1981 and 1982, and the second covering a major portion of March 1984). It was found that, on days with ESF, the ratio of the N in the altitude region 270-300 km between Ahmedabad and Waltair exhibited a sudden enhancement (starting at 1700 LT) by a factor of 8 to 30 (at 1900 LT) from a near-constant value of about 2 during the daytime; no such enhancement was observed on days without ESF. This relationship between the ESF days and the rapid intensification of the northern crest of the anomaly around sunset indicates that plasma, as well as neutral dynamics, are involved in the initiation of ESF.
