It is proposed that one hour and three hour indices of geomagnetic activity be introduced to take advantage of real time data processing. The indices would be computed hourly, having a series of 24 per day with the three hour values overlapping. The data would be available as a range of activity in nT and as a logarithmic index of the range. The exponent relating index to range in nT is closely based on the scale used for computing values of the geomagnetic index K. The indices have been available since June 1987 and are being tested on a trial basis.
