A compact binary system, consisting of two neutron stars or black holes in a tight orbit, emits gravitational waves, causing the orbit to decay. In the last seconds of this "inspiral", before the bodies merge, the wave frequency passes through the sensitive range of LIGO (and similar gravitational wave detectors) with a distinct signature which carries information about the masses of the bodies. Data from the second LIGO science run has been analyzed to search for signals from inspiral events in the galaxies of the Local Group, requiring coincident signals in multiple LIGO interferometers to greatly suppress false events of instrumental origin. Prospects for analysis of data from the third and subsequent science runs will also be discussed.
