The most widely accepted explanation for the massive, compact objects seen in the cores of many galaxies is that they are black holes as described by general relativity. The black hole hypothesis implies that these objects have rather distinctive properties, such as event horizons and a highly constrained multipolar structure. As observations peer ever deeper into these cores, it is becoming possible to search for these properties and to test this hypothesis in detail. In this talk, I will outline what future gravitational-wave observations are likely to bring to this endeavor. I will summarize what measurements should be doable, and suggest some groundwork for a practical formalism to "map" the spacetime geometry of these objects.
