The vital nature of onion germination in 15M aqueous ammonia was re-examined in view of the unusual character of the medium and the even higher rates of germination in 90% formic acid. Although germination in both media is temperature sensitive, they are clearly distinguishable. The effect of metabolic poisons on germination in ammonia was indifferent at 23-25°C, but became more and more pronounced as ambient temperature fell (as low as -24°C). In formic acid, the apparent germination process did not respond to the inhibitors at any temperature, hence could be considered almost certainly non-living in contrast to the situation in ammonia.
