The University of Rochester's Institute of Optics has been offering programs leading to a B.S. degree, a terminal M.S. degree, and a Ph.D. degree, all in Optics, since its founding in 1929. To date, The Institute has produced approximately 900 M.S. alumni, almost all of whom subsequently made successful careers in industry, and a number of whom eventually founded companies and amassed personal fortunes. This talk will describe the features of the Optics M.S. program that have made it successful, and will identify at least one troublesome area where there is room for improvement.
