We propose to conduct the first detailed, high quality survey of the X-ray and optical properties of a statistical sample of galaxy groups selected from the 2dF survey, using XMM in combination with the IMACS imaging spectrograph. The resulting dataset will probe the hot IGM down to the lowest fluxes observed in groups to date, and the galaxy luminosity function and dynamics down into the dwarf regime. The resulting dataset will provide a unique resource for studying the structure and evolution of groups, and the way in which group galaxies interact with their evolving environment. In the present pilot study, we target 6 of our sample of 25 groups, which span a wide range in group properties, and will launch our joint X-ray/optical study.
