This review sets in context contributions made by observations at Jodrell Bank to the understanding of the largest-scale structures in the Universe. These include the discovery of the radio objects subsequently indentified with quasars, the measurement of departures from the uniform Hubble flow in the nearby Universe and the observation of quasars gravitationally lensed by foreground galaxies. The recent detection of hot and cold regions in the cosmic microwave background is also described.
