We propose a 100 ks XMM observation of the bright, rapidly variable Seyfert 2 galaxy; NGC 7582. The primary aim of the observation is to measure the X-ray variability properties of this Seyfert 2 and to use this to confirm the similarities between NGC 7582 and the narrow-line Seyfert 1 class of AGN (NLS1s). Many of the intrinsic properties of NLS1s are exhibited by NGC 7582, however the link is far from certain. The proposed observation will measure the short time scale power spectral density (PSD) of the X-ray variability in NGC 7582, a break in which will result in the first estimate of the mass of the central black hole in NGC 7582 and confirm the link with NLS1s. This observation will also result in the first high resolution soft X-ray spectrum of NGC 7582.
