We propose a mini-survey of magnetic activity in L and T brown dwarfs in the X-ray regime. Our mini-sample includes a late-L and two T brown dwarfs. Our XMM-Newton exposures will reach X-ray luminosities a factor of 10 deeper than in existing archival data sets an possibly detect X-rays for the first time. Our targets are close (less than 6 pc), old (~1 Gyr) brown dwarfs, whose Halpha emission should not be contaminated by any accretion mechanism as in young brown dwarfs. Our mini-sample includes the nearest currently known brown dwarf. With this proposal, we aim at detecting X-rays during quiescence or flares. Even if undetected, upper limits will provide strong constraints for models of magnetic activity in brown dwarfs.
