Mrk 231 offers a prime opportunity to study the high-velocity ejection of gas from the active nucleus, i.e. the BAL phenomenon, using X-ray spectroscopy. To date there have been no adequately-exposed X-ray grating observations of this important class of AGN. A brief XMM exposure on Mrk 231 has shown detection of an Fe Ka line, and evidence for emission/absorption features in the soft band. The proposed exposure will allow us to: 1) determine physical conditions/kinematics of the X-ray gas, 2) confirm X-ray flux variability, 3) separate starburst and AGN components, 4) probe gas covering-fraction & metallicity.
