Scientific paper
To date RX J1343.4+0001 (F(0.5-10) ~ 2 x 10e(-13) erg/cm2/s) appears the best candidate to unambiguously confirm the existence of radio-quiet X-ray obscured type II QSOs at high redshifts. By the 35 ks observation proposed here we will be able to definitively disentangle between the two hypothesis suggested on the basis of previous less sensitive ROSAT and ASCA measurements, i.e. a truly flat spectrum (very unusual for a radio-quiet QSO) or a highly absorbed object. The main goal of this proposal is to obtain the first high-quality X-ray spectrum of a member of this elusive class of high luminosity obscured sources whose existence is required in the synthesis models of the cosmic X-ray background.
