1ES 1927+654 is the X-ray brightest AGN which has not been observed with XMM. 1ES 1927+654 is the second source with persistent, rapid, and extreme X-ray variability similar to IRAS 13224--3809. This type of variability appears to be a rare phenomenon among Seyfert galaxies and the physical mechanism is still unknown, thus the XMM-Newton observation is of great importance for understanding extreme X-ray variability in AGN. In addition, Chandra LETG observations revealed strong evidence for the presence of a relativistically broadened Fe K line, making 1ES 1927+654 the ideal object for studying matter under strong gravity with a moderate 60 ks exposure. Finally, 1ES 1927+654 is an example of an optically identified type 2 AGN showing type 1 AGN X-ray properties.
