We propose XMM-Newton observations of a well-defined sample of face-on spiral galaxies for which Chandra measurements are already available. The combined datasets will provide an unprecedented resource for the comparative study of the high energy properties of spiral galaxies over a wide range of Hubble type. Issues to be addressed include the distribution, physical state and energetics of the hot ISM and the spectral and temporal characteristics of the most luminous discrete sources. We will also investigate the links between X-ray emission and current/recent episodes of star-formation.
