We propose two follow up XMM EPIC observations of ROSAT PSPC images of the CMa R1 star-forming region showing (1) a rich cluster of stars, (2) a large, bright extended emission. We want to improve severalfold the previous sensitivity limit for point sources, allowing in particular detailed spectral studies. Also, we want to establish the true nature of the extended X-ray emission, which coincides with a bright optical nebula conjectured for the last twenty years to be a supernova remnant triggering star formation in the vicinity, but which might also be a superposition of unresolved X-ray emitting young stars.
