The GTO/FOS program includes a systematic study of degenerate stars in binary systems, both in the field and in globular clusters. The program for the globular cluster systems involves utilizing HST images to locate candidates for cluster X-ray sources {selection based on UV-excess}, followed by confirming FOS spectroscopy. Even one or two new close binaries confirmed/studied through this program will be important, as such systems are thought to dominate the kinetic energy budget of globular clusters--yet few are currently known. This sub-program is for follow-up FOS RAPID mode spectroscopy to probe the nature of the recently discovered and unusual optical/UV candidate counterpart to the luminous central X-ray burst source in NGC 6624; the spectra will be time-resolved over the suspected 11 minute binary orbital period.
