We will obtain very high S/N (~100:1 per diode) observations of the Lyman-alpha forest region of the low-redshift quasar H1821+643 (zem=0.297) with the GHRS G140L grating. The HST observations will be supplemented with gound-based imagery and spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the quasar field to study the relationship between the Lyman-alpha clouds and galaxies at redshifts z<0.3. Such studies are essential for understanding the nature of the Lyman-alpha clouds detected at much higher redshifts in the optical region.
