Scientific paper

We propose to test and refine a new evolutionary scenario for very massive stars ( M>40 Msun) by constructing an empirical isochrone of the dense stellar cluster, R136a, in the LMC. The isochrone will be based on stellar and wind parameters derived from GHRS and FOS spectra of individual stars in the cluster. The isochrone age will be given by the positions of pre-main sequence stars on the HR diagram. The metal content (Z) will be determined directly from GHRS spectra of the less luminous stars in R136a having weak winds. We will construct evolutionary models for each star observed. By requiring that the model match the observed characteristics of each star at the specified cluster age and iron abundance, we will obtain a finely tuned grid of evolutionary models for massive stars. The results of this program should have major consequences for studies of stellar populations with massive stars and for stellar evolution.
