UV observations of soft X-ray transients (SXTs) will be madeusing the FOS. This is part of an extensive multiwavelengthtarget of opportunity campaign to monitor newly discoveredSXTs in outburst and throughout the subsequent decline.Recent work establishes that a high proportion of SXTs harborblack holes, so these observations provide an unrivalledopportunity to obtain high quality data from an accretingblack hole. UV data is a keystone of our multiwavelengthcampaign because the disk regions of interest radiatepredominantly in the UV. Emission lines will allow us to probethe kinematics of the inner disk region. We will determinethe relative strengths of the reprocessed X-ray flux emittedin the UV, and the UV flux generated by viscous heating in theaccretion flow. Multiwavelength observations will probe thephysics of the accretion flow throughout the outburst. Theobservations will yield a detailed quantitative test of thethermal disk instability model for SXT outbursts. FOS work onNova Muscae 1991 demonstrated the critical importance to thistest of recording the UV and optical spectrum during thedecline. The unique FOS/G160L capability for simultaneous 1100-2500A spectra and optical photometry with 2s time resolutionwill be exploited: an echo-mapping experiment will measure thesize of the reprocessing regions in the accretion disk, andthus probe morphology changes as the decline proceeds.
