The deviation of the observed accelerations in extragalactic systems (galaxies and clusters of galaxies) has been interpreted, by a minority of researchers, as signal of the breakdown of Newtonian (and for that matter Einstein) gravity at these distance scales rather than the presence of large amounts of ``dark matter.'' A number of such proposals is reviewed with particular emphasis on their predictions on the rotation curves of spiral galaxies, the most unequivocal measure of such deviations.
