Gravitational lensing provides a strong test for cosmogonic models. We attempt to determine the lensing properties of different models, e.g., the frequency of multiply imaged quasars, the distribution of separations and the lens redshifts. This is done by detailed numerical propagation of light rays through a universe having a distribution of inhomogeneities derived from particular cosmogonic models. Here we present results for matter distributions obtained with the standard CDM (cold dark matter) scenario. This model predicts far more widely split quasar images than have been found. This means the COBE normalized CDM model with Ω=1 and H0=50 km/s/Mpc is inconsistent with current observations. It might be possible to construct variants of this model which could pass the stringent tests provided by strong gravitational lensing.
