Combined optical and X-ray imaging were used to measure the distribution of light and gravitating mass in the core of the cluster of galaxies Abell 665. Deep R-band imaging was obtained to measure the extent and shape of the luminous halo around the cD galaxy in A665. The surface brightness profile obeys a power law with index 1.4 out to a detection limit of 28 mag/sq.arc.sec and a distance of 500 h-1 kpc, typical of a cD galaxy. The ellipticity was found to rise to 0.4 at 10 H-1 kpc and remain at this value out to the detection limit. The distribution of cluster galaxies around the cD galaxy exhibits no measurable concentration and is apparently much less relaxed. The X-ray surface brightness profile of the intracluster gas emission was found by least-squares fitting of a model to a 0.4-2 keV X-ray image obtained by the ROSAT satellite and PSPC detector. While the inner ellipticity of the X-ray emission is consistent with the shape of the optical emission, the shape of the X-ray emission is significantly rounder at larger radii, suggesting that the optical emission is tracing the mass rather than the gravitational potential in the cluster core.
