The origin of intracluster gas is still an open question that may
enlighten the problem of the setup of the clusters of galaxies potential
well. The detection of space gradients of metal abundance up to high
redshifts can infer the original formation scenario. The cosmological
perspectives opened by the ultimate X-ray telescopes are discussed.
