We develop a general relativistic non-perturbative model, in Schwarzschild space-time, for an end-to-end simulation of the observations and data reduction of a scanning astrometric mission, like Hipparcos, scaled with the error budget foreseen for the next generation astrometric missions. The simulation reproduces successfully the expected results, which scale correctly with the single-measurement error of the GAIA satellite, a concept for global astrometry within the 2000+ scientific program of the European Space Agency. Moreover, tests with a perturbative PPN model have shown that, given the expected GAIA accuracy, the PPN parameter gamma is likely to be measured with a precision of at least 10-6.
