The context for this work is the construction of characteristic initial data for a compact object in orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole, although the results presented are not for a specific problem but are general. We show how to transform data for a Newtonian problem into initial data for the matter and gravity fields in the characteristic formulation of relativity. We also show how to construct co-rotating coordinates for this problem.
