The BTZ black hole and other black hole solutions in three-dimensions live only in space-time with a negative cosmological constant, otherwise require some negative energy source. We explain this situation by establishing the non-existence theorem of black holes in three-dimensional gravith which satisfies the dominant energy condition. The theorem is given both for apparent horizons and trapping horizons.
