Using a curvature based perturbation theory, we show that the pulsation equation governing the dynamical evolution of perturbations on a static spacetime can be written as a wave equation which is (manifestly) gauge-invariant, hyperbolic and whose spatial operator is self-adjoint. An application to the non-spherical linear stability analysis of non-Abelian black holes is also discussed.
