A connection between the sum-over-histories approach to the quantization of minisuperspace models and more thoroughly understood field theory is discussed. The definition of the path integral in a domain with a boundary is studied and a relation of such definition to a particle interpretation of the field theory is found. It is shown that different particle interpretations (i.e. different vacua of the field theory) can be interpreted as different interactions with boundary of the domain. Such interactions can be understood as a phenomenological description of measurement devices.
