The quantization procedures of the electromagnetic field both in Rindler and Minkowski spacetimes are reviewed. Next, we focus on the Unruh problem, that is the thermal nature of the Minkowski vacuum state from the point of view of an accelerated observer, emphasizing the difference in the boundary conditions that should be imposed to the field in the two spacetimes. This difference appears to be a serious obstacle against the occurrence of the Unruh effect.
