String theory is the best candidate for unification of gauge interactions with gravity. There are various string effective theories (bosonic, type I, type IIA, type IIB and heterotic E8 × E8 or SO(32)) which can be represented by some effective actions with suitable field equations. In these theories lots of different stringy modes appear, but they have a common bosonic sector which after a suitable dimensional reduction can be represented by a 4-dimensional effective action S = (1)/({2λ s2 )} ∫ {d4 x√ { - g4 } e{ - φ } } { {R + (∇ φ )2 - (1)/({12)}H2 } ; \}, (1) where ɸ is the dilaton, g4 the determinant of the 4-dimensional metric, R the 4-dimensional Ricci scalar, Hμνρ = ∂[μBνρ] (dH = 0) the NS-NS axion with H2 = HμνρHμνρ and Bμν the antisymmetric tensor potential, Bμν = -Bμν. The dilaton, the axion and the graviton are the massless ('stringy') modes of the theory. In particular, the action (1) is the weak coupling limit (string coupling constant gs = exp (ɸ/2) → 0) action of the heterotic E8 × E8 string theory ...
