Thermally stable torus models exist for various types of plasma radial transport, including nonlinear centrifugal interchanges and linear atmospheric wind-driven interchanges. Significant temporal variability of the torus may be driven by variations in Io's atmosphere. Electron cooling at high densities occurs in linear transport models. A very low torus density at the time of the Pioneer encounters may be reconciled with stability of the sodium cloud.
